Can Syften monitor YouTube mentions?

Syften checks YouTube search results for your saved queries at least once per day. It validates matches against the video title, description, and searchable keywords where available, then routes useful results to Slack, email, API, or webhooks.

YouTube uses a separate query syntax and setup area in Syften. Monitoring costs $20/month for 10 YouTube filters because obtaining the data is expensive.

Included

New videos surfaced by YouTube search

Use exact phrases, required and excluded words, title or description hints, hashtags, OR groups, tags, and AI qualification.

Not analyzed

Video, audio, transcripts, and comments

A spoken mention that does not appear in searchable metadata can be missed. This is creator and video discovery, not complete audiovisual monitoring.

Visual content that shapes a buying decision

YouTube videos worth reviewing

The strongest alerts point to a video whose searchable metadata reveals a concrete relationship to your brand, market, competitor, launch, or creator program.

Brand and product videos

Results whose titles, descriptions, or keywords name your company, product, domain, documentation, or founder.

Catch reviews and coverage you did not arrange

Competitor comparisons

Reviews, alternatives, migrations, versus videos, and tutorials centered on products your buyers already consider.

See which criteria creators emphasize

Tutorial and workflow demand

Videos teaching the category, integration, job, or recurring problem your product helps people complete.

Learn what the market wants demonstrated

Relevant creators

Channels already publishing about your customers, category, competitors, technology, or adjacent workflows.

Research relevance before outreach

Launch and campaign coverage

Videos connected to a release, new feature, announcement, event, partnership, or campaign hashtag.

Know whether the story traveled

Content opportunities

Repeated video titles, promises, and formats that expose category vocabulary, questions, and gaps worth answering.

Turn creator patterns into better content
From saved query to a video worth watching

How YouTube monitoring works in Syften

YouTube monitoring is configured separately from community monitoring. Build queries around searchable video metadata, check the results with YouTube's limitations in mind, and route only useful videos to your team.

1
Define

Choose the video signal

List product names, competitors, categories, tutorials, campaigns, creator topics, and hashtags worth reviewing.

2
Query

Use YouTube-style syntax

Add exact phrases, required or excluded words, title and description hints, hashtags, or explicit OR groups.

3
Validate

Check searchable metadata

Syften confirms the query terms against the title, description, and keywords where available before alerting.

4
Route

Send the video to its owner

Deliver matches to Slack, email, API, or webhooks so marketing, DevRel, support, PR, or the founder can review them.

Understand the discovery boundary

YouTube search is the top of the funnel, not a complete index

YouTube decides which videos appear for a query using a system designed to capture viewer attention. If a relevant video is not surfaced in those results, Syften cannot discover it.

Syften then validates the result against searchable title, description, and keyword metadata. It does not inspect the video, audio, transcript, or comments, so the final review still belongs to a person.

Use concrete queries. A required term with +, an exact phrase, or a focused title hint is usually more dependable than a broad one-word topic.
Discovery funnel
What each layer proves
1 · YouTube search
Candidate discovery

YouTube chooses which new videos are visible for the saved query. Coverage depends on those algorithmic results.

2 · Syften validation
Metadata match

Syften checks title, description, and keyword metadata and applies your exclusions, tags, or AI qualification.

3 · Human review
Watch here

A person watches the video to understand the actual argument, tone, spoken mentions, and appropriate next step.

Concrete setup

YouTube keyword alert examples

These queries use YouTube-style syntax, not Syften's general community filter syntax. Start with the narrowest useful signal, then add exclusions or AI qualification only when the results prove noisy.

Exact product or company name

Brand discovery
"Your Product"

Find videos whose searchable metadata matches a multi-word brand, company, or product name.

Require the important term

Higher precision
+yourproduct

Use YouTube's plus operator when the result must actually include a word instead of merely being related to it.

Prefer title matches

Review discovery
intitle:"Your Product review"

Ask YouTube to prefer videos with the phrase in the title; Syften still validates title, description, and keywords.

Follow a campaign hashtag

Launch coverage
#yourcampaign

Find videos surfaced for a launch, event, category, or campaign hashtag.

YouTube supports OR and parentheses in this separate query system. Its OR precedence can be counterintuitive, so use parentheses liberally whenever you combine alternatives. The YouTube monitoring documentation covers the full syntax.

Choose the right YouTube workflow

Manual search, media suites, and video alerts solve different jobs

Choose based on whether you are researching now, reporting across media channels, or waiting for a focused YouTube result to appear.

YouTube search

Investigate a known topic on demand

Useful when you remember to search and can inspect the results immediately. It does not preserve a monitoring workflow or route new matches to your team.

Media intelligence suite

Measure broad coverage and campaigns

Useful when dashboards, reach, sentiment, influencer analytics, and cross-media reporting matter. It can be more system than a small team needs for precise discovery.

Syften

Receive focused new-video alerts

Useful when saved YouTube queries, metadata validation, AI qualification, and routing to Slack, email, API, or webhooks matter more than a reporting dashboard.

Built for markets that learn by watching

The useful alert is a video someone can evaluate

Syften is a strong fit when your team can watch a relevant result, understand the creator and audience, and turn it into a thank-you, relationship, campaign insight, product lesson, support response, or better piece of content.

At Rewardful, we're huge believers in word-of-mouth marketing. I've used most of the social monitoring tools on the market and most have a lot of noise in the results or miss important conversations happening online. Syften returns the most relevant social mentions with the least amount of noise out of all the tools I've tested so far. Their community listening is the best on the market and I love how you can fine tune by source.
I love that Syften monitors all the communities I am part of but don't have enough time to check all day. Now, I can check my email and see conversations happening on Twitter, Reddit, Indie Hackers, and many more places. It's incredibly useful. Worth every dollar.

We use Syften to react to people saying things about us on the internet every single day. It's a set once and forget tool that just helps your team keep your pulse on whatever it is you care about.
Syften is awesome. I use it for my business so I can monitor the brand, and participate in online discussions which can help us attract new customers. I also use it personally to keep track of niche subjects that I'm interested in like emerging tech and products.

We love Syften at PostHog and find it incredibly useful for listening to our open-source community. The Slack integration enables our entire team to find ways to connect with our users, whether it's the Marketing team sharing new content or the Engineering team answering technical questions. The filtering system is especially powerful and helps us separate the signal from the noise.
I've written a couple books and like to keep an eye on how and where folks are talking about them. Syften has helped me catch several key conversations that I otherwise wouldn't have seen. Even on the days without any notable alerts, I'm still happy to know that I haven't missed anything. A very useful tool.

Syften has become integral to our business. It allows us to monitor *and* respond in real-time using their super simple webhooks. For example, when people mention our competitors being expensive on Twitter, Syften finds it and enables us to respond instantly with Zapier. It's paid for itself many times over. It even helped us secure $5M in funding for one of our community members. Michael has been overwhelmingly supportive over the past 18+ months we've been a customer and we couldn't be more grateful.
I use Syften every day and have been for a year. I looked at various other social listening tools but they were mostly aimed at big brands and enterprise customers and carried a hefty price tag. Syften tracks all of the major networks that I'm interested (even ones the big tools don't) and it's affordable for businesses of every size. Every day I get an email digest of people talking about my product for me to take immediate action on.

I gather the mentions I get from Syften and add them to our customer sales and partner presentations to show how our product is gaining mindshare amongst users on Reddit and forums. These slides are very impactful.
Syften has been a great tool to understand in which communities my website is being mentioned, or topics relevant to my business. It allowed me to engage in meaningful discussions and to identify some important actors in my niche.

Syften has enabled us to keep an eye on the topics related to our product. We can easily track posts about discount codes, email marketing, and e-commerce. We can then suggest using our service, or just be helpful answering questions on subjects that we are familiar with.

Frequently asked questions

What does Syften monitor on YouTube?

Syften monitors YouTube search results for saved queries. It validates matches against video title, description, and keywords where available.

It does not analyze the audio or video contents.

How often does Syften check YouTube?

YouTube monitoring runs on a daily cadence. It is meant for discovery, competitor tracking, and creator research rather than minute-by-minute crisis monitoring.

Can I monitor video transcripts?

No. Syften does not analyze YouTube transcripts or the contents of videos. It monitors YouTube search results and metadata.

What syntax can I use for YouTube alerts?

You can use YouTube-style search syntax such as exact phrases, exclusions, intitle:, description:, hashtags, and OR groups.

Why can YouTube results miss videos?

YouTube search is optimized for attention, not complete monitoring. If YouTube does not surface a video for the query, Syften may miss it.

Is YouTube monitoring included in every plan?

YouTube monitoring is a paid add-on because scraping YouTube is expensive. Syften charges an extra $20/month for each 10 YouTube filters.

Can I search old YouTube matches in the Syften archive?

No. YouTube results are separate from Syften's archive search.

Do you support other communities, or just YouTube?

Syften monitors the public web and these communities:
